The legacy of the February 28th coup reinforces calls for a new civilian constitution. As controversial coup plot trials like Ergenekon and Sledgehammer continue, Turkey marks the 15th anniversary of the February 28th process. Known as a "post-modern coup" that ultimately brought down the Islamist Welfare Party and True Path Party (Refah-Yol) coalition in 1997, the memorandum handed to the late Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan outlining the army's concerns over the threat to secularism has had a lasting impact on the civil-military relations in the country.

A final effort is being made to unite the divided island, but many believe that the stalemate will continue. With just months remaining before Cyprus is expected to assume the rotating EU presidency this summer, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon made a final effort to bring Turkish Cypriot President Dervish Eroglu and his Greek Cypriot counterpart Dimitris Christofias closer to a solution in a two-day meeting that ended Wednesday (January 25th) at Greentree, near New York City.

2011 did not signal there is a light at the end of Turkey's EU tunnel, and 2012 looks to be even more problematic. As Turkey enters 2012, its EU accession process remains on the brink of paralysis. On the political front there has not been any significant progress, while the eurozone crisis has shifted European and Turkish policy makers' attention away from further expansion and integration.
